Making dark paint colors work

Dark, moody colors are in style—-just flip through a recent copy of Architecture Digest. But when it comes time to sell, everyone and their neighbor will tell you to paint over your dark green dining room or your navy bedroom.

They aren’t wrong. But what if your budget is limited and you need to spend your market preparation dollars elsewhere? Here are two examples of how to make your dark rooms show-ready.

With light-colored drapes, rug, and furniture, this dark green living room does not look gloomy. Photographing the room from this angle, highlighting the windows, also helps it appear bright and fresh. We got only positive feedback from buyers on this room.

This next room was being used as a bedroom by sellers who liked to have a very dark room to improve their sleep. Read about why we se it up as a living room.

Despite the dark blue paint, the room feels welcoming because we kept the decor as light as we could and removed the shutters from the upper windows.

So should you paint over dark colors? In most cases, yet. But talk to me first about what else you may need to spend your market preparation budget on. We will come up with a plan that makes the best, most impactful, use of your money and time.
